DRAFT "Bullet-In" club newsletter #303

for October 2017

FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the Committee will be at the Club range building on Wednesday 25 October 2017 at 7:00 pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

 From The President

The end of club year is fast approaching which means subs are due.  The WPSSC Annual General Meeting is set for 0930 am Sunday 5th November and you must be financial in order to vote or stand for election onto the committee.

Please attend the AGM as it is your chance to have a say in who is elected onto the committee to manage club affairs, finances, planning and improvements, events etc.

The secretary has forwarded nomination forms, remits for discussion at the AGM etc. so please make yourself familiar with the content of those remits and information, requirements and deadlines with regards to nominations.  Your club, your choice.

Following the AGM the club is providing a BBQ.  A few club and private firearms will be available for members to try something a little different.  Ammunition will be provided and a member available to assist with the different firearms.  Please bring your earmuffs and safety glasses.

I am sure we are all continuing to enjoy the WPSSC facilities and our chosen disciplines but feel it fair to say that most stress within the club is generated within, i.e. self-inflicted
The committee are all busy people and pay a sub' like everyone else.  They generally go above and beyond to plan and implement the necessary requirements for members and keep things running as smooth as possible for the benefit of all

There is nothing more frustrating and annoying when someone complains of something they could easily remedy themselves,  without any fuss and negativity, if they displayed a little initiative, asked a simple question or made the effort to sort the problem there and then.

So let’s all keep the club a positive environment for all to enjoy; arrive in good time and get involved in setting up for matches and packing down after the event.  If something needs doing, put in a little effort and do rather than ignore and complain later.

Other news;

The mechanism which operates the turning targets on range 3 is getting a serious makeover and this work is being done as far as practical without interfering with the use of that range.

The club has acquired small pistol, large pistol, small rifle and large rifle primers, and 9 mm copper washed/plated projectiles for sale to members

This is being trialled with the view that components for the most commonly used calibre are readily available so members can keep on shooting.

Also available is a limited amount of PPU .223 (reloadable case) ammo and standard velocity .22 ammo.

The club also recently purchased a needle tumbler which does an incredible job of cleaning brass inside, outside, and if deprimed it even cleans the primer pocket. Contact Gary if you wish to purchase any of the above or use the tumbler (for nominal cost).  If you wish to use the tumbler, prepare your brass in advance.

There are many solutions and ideas on what to use in the cleaning/tumbling process.  A good cheap formula, which gives excellent results is water, white vinegar and detergent.  White vinegar is available in 5 litre quantities from Moore Wilsons (Moore Wilson brand) and is inexpensive.

As always, make use of the club website(http://wpssc.org.nz) to check range schedules and upcoming events.  If you have any pics, info or match results you want posted, email to  wpsscsec@gmail.com, hand to the secretary or post to WPSSC, P.O. Box 175, Carterton.

Service Rifle Match report, Sunday 1st October 2017

The gods were obviously smiling upon us as we had a fine, slightly overcast day with no wind.
Eight intrepid shooters turned up which is great compared to other days that have ranged from zero to four.

Sighting matches ran from 9.00am-9.30am and for the most part, looked not too bad with everyone at least putting holes in the Fig 12 target. Although not necessarily where they were intended to be.

First match was Application 10 rounds, slow fire in 2 minutes, shot prone, this is a good first match to get one’s eye in and settled down.

Match 2 Snap. Five, eight second exposures and two rounds each exposure. This tends to open the groups up, while shot standing unsupported. Eight seconds for 2 rounds, particularly with a semi-auto, is pretty generous.

Match 3 Trinity. A service rifle standard match. Five rounds standing, five sitting or kneeling, five rounds prone. A minute for each position. A good test of one’s all round shooting positions without time pressure. A great practice as a training match to aim to achieve 73 points plus to do well in competition. A “V” Bull is worth 5.1 points, so a 15 round match is a 75.15 possible.

Match 4 Barricade. A twist on an old favourite of mine. Engaging the target through nominated portals. The barricade itself is deemed to be a bullet proof brick wall, so holes in the barricade mean a loss of points on the target. Remembering that the scope is higher than the muzzle can be advantageous.  All in all, a great competition and many thanks to those who turned up to take part.

NOTE: There will NOT be a Service Rifle match next month as November 5 th is the AGM and related matches.

For interest today we had seven AR15’s with optics of various types and an iron sighted 16” barrel SKS used by Vik, who shot well in the day.

Overall Results

1 st Andrew 243.32
2 nd John 236.29
3 rd Giles 232.18
4 th Ralph 228.36
5 th Vik 219.25
6 th Shane 215.18
7 th Gavin 211.18
8 th Hannah 182.15
Possible score was 250.50

Safety on Range 6: Please note that if you are on Range 6, & need to go downrange (for whatever reason) after closing the range, place the orange "Range Closed" cone in front of the firing point to advise anyone coming to the range.  There has in the past been one occasion where a person was observed (in time, & safety) emerging from the bush downrange before shooting was to commence.
