    (DRAFT) "Bullet-In" club newsletter #294
    for November 2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the RANGE next Wednesday 30 November 2016, 7:30 pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

    From The Committee:

The AGM was well attended.  All of the remits presented were passed and changes to our constitution will soon be registered with Incorporated Societies.  Apart from that the meeting was a subdued event, the subs remain the same for next year, and you should have received notification of your committee.

The working bee on the 12th November was cancelled due to weather, so this will be rescheduled & advised. Jason Marshall is the member to contact if you have any queries: 0274 571676.

Electric Fences: The electric fences need to be hooked up to make connection with the live feed to be effective.  I visited the range late Sunday afternoon on 6th November to find the entrance wire at range 1 was connected to the waratah, the fence in front of range 6 to the handle on the container and the wire by the pedestrian gate to range 6 connected to the gate latch.  Please re-connect the wires in the proper manner so we have 'live wires' to ensure the bulls grazing the adjacent land don't breech onto the ranges where they can cause considerable damage.

Falling Targets, range 4: the frames are away to be galvanised and the steel plates ordered so the falling targets should be in place and operational within about 3 weeks.

In general the ranges are looking great so please remember if you see something out of place or a bit of rubbish laying about put it/them in the appropriate place.

Targets and Supplies: if you see we are getting low on targets or any other item that keeps the club operational let myself or the secretary know so we can replenish in good time.

    Warm Barrels!

    Gary

Our safety/training team has reviewed the info package provided to B cat applicants with attention to obligations once that endorsement is obtained. If you know anyone considering pistol shooting, make them aware of these conditions or refer them to the secretary, a committee member or PNZ for the relevant info.

RO's: we require more match qualified RO's and are planning to run some  RO course(s) at the WPSSC.

On the Range: please remember that members (committee included) go to the club to engage in activities, have a plink, test re-loads, sight in a rifle etc and often have limited time to do so.

In the interests of keeping this a positive environment in which one can relax and enjoy, please refer club politics to a monthly committee meeting. Meetings are well advertised, and all members are welcome to attend. Here views can be expressed in a controlled manner and steps taken to resolve issues in good time.

Trails End 2017: dates for this event 2017 are 24th, 25th and 26th March. More detailed advice will be posted closer to the event.

Safety on Range 6: Please note that if you are on Range 6, & need to go downrange (for whatever reason) after closing the range, place the orange "Range Closed" cone in front of the firing point to advise anyone coming to the range.  There has been one occasion where a person was observed (in time, & safety) emerging from the bush downrange before shooting was to commence.

CAS: a monthly CAS training/practice day has been approved and scheduled for 4th Sunday of the month on ranges 1 and 2. This practice day is a great opportunity to brush up on handling and safety without the match related pressure. This is a 'B cat club event' and also a great opportunity for anyone to come along and see what cowboy action shooting is all about.  More news, results etc here.

    IPSC: Phil Dunlop

PNZ training manuals: hard copies of the General Coaching Skills Manual were recently ordered and are available. FYI, manuals for all disciplines are available on-line at: http://www.pistolnz.org.nz/training.aspx.

The first version of the WPSSC B cat' training manual (thanks Gerry! is available for download here.

    "Bullet-In" club newsletter #293
    for October 2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the RANGE next Wednesday 26 October 2016, 730 pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

    From The Committee:

Falling Targets, range 4: construction of the main frame/base for these targets is complete. This weekend the frames will be temporarily fitted and metal posts cemented in place. The main frames  will then be sent away to be galvanized prior to the final install.

Many thanks to Lifestyle Engineering for their favourable quote and prompt attention to the construction of these targets.

Clay Traps: we are still waiting for Hunting and Fishing to supply the two new traps ordered some time ago. They apparently have quite a back order.

    Club Bank Balance
: as of the last committee meeting, the club has a balance of $31005.32.

Road Gate Security: yet again the range access has been left insecure. For those who are unaware, you do not have to lock the padlock in order to remove your key. Anyone unlocking the road gate, please leave the padlock OPEN so the last to vacate the range can secure the gate (if they do not hold a club key).

    "Bullet-In" club newsletter #292
    for August/September2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the Parkvale DA Hall next Wednesday 28 September 2016, 7pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

The recent working bee was well organised and reportedly well supported and attended by members of our many disciplines. The upgrade to the turning targets on range three was completed. Thanks to the team who put in the time and effort prior to the working bee with the prep work and construction of the wall and removal of the old metal work. The ranges and surrounds are looking great but as always there is still work to do so keep your eye on the range schedule for another working bee in the near future.

AGM 2016: the AGM is set down for Sunday the 16th October. Soon you will receive nomination forms and information regarding remits and topics for discussion at the meeting. Give some thought to whom you wish to nominate (for all positions) and represent your club.

(The position of treasurer is one we know we will have a probable vacancy for.   The accounting system is much improved with the recent implementation of online payments which streamlines the process considerably enabling the treasurer to set up, receive approval, pay and reconcile more efficiently).

Black Powder: “Gladstone Rendezvous”: the 2016 rendezvous is scheduled for 28th 29th & 30th October. A notice is attached to this Bullet-In. Dust off your cap and ball, flintlock or percussion smoke-stick and get along, participate or watch some of the shooting, see the smoke and smell the sulphur....you might even get hooked?

This is a 'B cat club event' and also a great opportunity for anyone to come along and see what cowboy action shooting is all about.  More news, results etc here.

Road Gate Padlock: On two recent occasions I have found the gate insecure and the padlock hanging loose and locked. If the last to leave the range does not have a key they are unable to secure the gate. If you are first to arrive please leave the gate padlock 'unlocked'.

Falling targets Range 4: the club received quotes for replacement falling targets on range 4 and given the go ahead. Allowing time for the construction and fitting we anticipate they should be in place in approx 2 months time. The targets will be two sets of 6, on a hinged gate system so they can be swung out of the way leaving the range clear to set up for different events such as speed steel.

Multi Stack Traps: the two approved multi stack traps are on back order and it may be a month or two before we take possession. Hunting and Fishing have offered the use of a couple of traps in the interim if and when required.

Range 5 and 6: FYI, plans are in place to prepare and grass seed the bare areas on ranges 5 and 6.

    "Bullet-In" club newsletter #291 for June/July2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the Parkvale DA Hall next Wednesday 31st July, 7pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

B cat endorsed license: the increased attendances at club events indicates that many have taken note of the reminder regarding “B” cat commitments. For those who may require some further clarity, the relevant section from a letter of agreement between the Police and PNZ is included for your info.

The complete letter is available at http://www.pistolnz.org.nz/media/5661/letter_of_agreement_2013.pdf

    9. CLUB ACTIVITIES - REGULATION 22(1) (b)

NZPA will require clubs as a condition of affiliation to in turn record member participation in accordance with 9.1 to 9.3:

9.1 For the purposes of regulation 22(1) (b), which requires active participation in club activities on at least 12 days in each year, a “club activity” can be defined as follows:

9.1.1 A club based activity, on a range, which has been advertised and organised for the day.

Quite surprisingly, no-one took the opportunity to put forward suggestion(s) for any additional “B” cat events. At present the first Sunday of the month does not include a scheduled B cat event as such and I suggest this become a practice/safety type day. Please forward any comment to the secretary or myself and if we receive sufficient interest, it will be included in the range schedule, and providing there is an RO (required for two or more shooters on any range) and a target is scored (indisputable record of an attendance) it would be considered a club event.

There is also the option of the occasional extra (5th) Sunday of which there are three months remaining in 2016 with five Sundays; July, October and December.

Our safety/training team is reviewing the info package provided to B cat applicants with attention to obligations once that endorsement is obtained. If you know anyone considering pistol shooting, make them aware of these conditions or refer them to the secretary, a committee member or PNZ for the relevant info.

RO's: we require more match qualified RO's and are researching the possibility of running RO course(s) at the WPSSC.

Next meetingis Wednesday 27th July 2016 at the Deer Stalkers Hall, 7 p.m.

Improvements: the committee and section directors are striving to keep the club up to date and address practical requirements. The committee has approved the purchase of two new multi-stack clay traps and waiting on quotes for targets for speed challenge (steel targets) and plans are well under way to renew the falling plates on range 4 and the turning targets on range 3.

Working Bees: in the near future we will have working bees for some of the above so please make an effort. Many hands make light work, and it is a great chance to mingle with other club members.

The club will provide refreshments and a BBQ lunch when required. Notice of these working Bees will be published in good time along with a list of tools etc required for the tasks.

The falling plate on range 4 have been removed as they are unsafe. In the interim, steel plates are set up and can be left in position until the work is completed.

In the Spring, we will have a few working bees to remove stones, roll the bare areas, and sow grass seed on ranges 5-6.

Final note: please respect what we have, tidy up afterward and help out where you can.

    Warm Barrels”

Two x 15 round mags have been purchased for the club Ruger 10/22 and are now available.

The club has also ordered a good quantity of the CCI standard velocity .22 ammo.  Don't panic, we still have a few bricks in stock.  The last we could get and a price enabling us to hopefully (depending on whether we can arrange transport from Auckland) keep it at $50 a brick.

A couple of corporate shoot (tentative at this stage) bookings which we may need help for so keep your phone handy.

    "Bullet-In" club newsletter #290 for May 2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the range next Wednesday 25th May (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

The three gun nationals held at the WPSSC 28-30 April 20016 were a great success. Phil D has forwarded a report which is included below in this Bullet-In.

Earth works range 5 & 6: the weather remained favourable so the scheduled (extensive) earth works on range 6 went ahead as planned. The 20 ton digger, bull dozer, tipper truck and tractor with levelling bar made quick work of this rather large task resulting in minimum range closure. A large amount of spill was carted to fill the low area between the 50 and 100 meter mounds which will hopefully relieve the flooding issues. We now have four more ranges on range 6 with 2.5 meter dividing barrier mounds enabling these ranges to be used similtaniously. All mounds are at right angles and when in use all shooting will be directed toward the cliff.

This area has been totally tranformed providing far more versatility; capability to set more stages, run national matches, areas to conceil clay traps, a large parking area (if/when required) and overall a more usable/functional facility. There are pic's on the club web site, or better still visit the range and have a look.

Monday morning I learnt the digger was not require elsewhere as initially indicated, so after completing a little touch-up work on the 100 meter mound the landlord made good use of the machine and had the operator remove some problem willows from the river at the north end of the olive grove while I obtained committee approval and planned the earthworks for range 5 which commenced Tuesday morning. It took a little more and longer than anticipated to get the 50 meter range we hoped for but it was achieved. Once the terrace at the back was dug out, every meter back into the hill meant another 100 plus meters of spill to move. The safety walls left and right have been extended and should now qualify for range certification.

A huge thanks to those who turned up to assist and those who provided personal equipment to get the job done.

Committee: due to personal commitments two members have recently resigned their position as committee members. If you know anyone who can serve the club please forward their name to the secretary or myself. In particular, the clay section would benefit from having a member on the committee.

Financial: the club has spent quite an amount of coin over the past three months but it has been money well spent on improvements, stores and ammunition. We have a shed full of clays and heaps of club ammo on hand and new ear muffs. The clays and ammo is simply a debt the club carries until the dollars are retrieved through shoots, ammo' sales and corporate events.

Earmuffs: the recently purchased high vis. earmuffs had their inaugural outing at a recent corporate shoot. They looked a lot more professional and were more user friendly. The earmuffs are secure in the storeroom and although purchased mainly for corporate events are available to members. If you require the use of club earmuffs, see a committee member who will issue and record the fact you have muffs. Failure to return the muffs will result in a $40 invoice to that member and any not returned after a corporate shoot will result in the group being invoiced accordingly.

They are good quality high vis ear-muffs. Please treat them accoringly and do not leave them laying about in direct sunlight. After use, please return to a committee member who will record their return. A limited number of these earmuffs will soon be stored in a locked cabinet near the sigh-in table for club use.

Grumble Time: this portion of the column is prompted as the result of many comments expressed by the 'do-ers' in our club which have unfortunately become far more frequent of late so if this appears a little harsh, put yourself in my position as the recipient of these negative comments.

Observation: many members do not appear to realise or appreciate the work that goes into running the WPSSC. Some have the view or expect privileges and everything to be done for them because they pay a sub and simply front up, use the facilities or shoot the scheduled shoot and leave.

These people are usually the first to moan, bitch, criticise and complain, and the last, if ever, to help out, attend a working bee, participate in a clay 'pick-up', take the initiative and sort something, or come to a meeting to take part in the function of the club, put forward a view or suggestion.  Moan because the stapler is out of staples or there are no targets on the range, or some other trivial time and energy wasting complaint and appear content to complain rather than get off their 'A', rectify it, or ask a simple question such as “how can I help?”.

It is rather irritating for those who organise, run matches and corporate shoots, do the logistics, strive to improve and keep our club functioning at a high standard as well as improve our facilities, liaise with other clubs, PNZ, the Police, the council and remain a venue envied by many other clubs.

The secretary, treasurer and committee, along with the section directors and the dedicated few, work hard, (mostly & often in their own time, at their own expense), or sacrifice their shooting time to keep the club operating efficiently for all to enjoy.

These members often struggle to juggle personal life, work commitments etc to do a thankless task no-one else wanted or are prepared to take on, organise set-up and run corporate shoots, matches, order/receive supplies, liaise with the landlord, the farmer re stock, mow the lawns, spray the weeds, maintain the electric fences, replace/repair damage, build the toilet block, plan improvements and organise the same, replenish targets on the many ranges, order targets, purchase stationery, maintain the traps, put out for quotes on targets, ammo, clays, club guns, attend committee meetings etc and the list goes on..........

Constructive suggestion and action is far more fruitful so help out or suggest rather than complain or ignore. We all have a common interest in shooting no matter what your preferred discipline, whether you are a competitive shooter or a casual plinker.

If you haven't checked the white, club notice board, advised the secretary you are not receiving a news letter, familiarised yourself with and checked the club website or confirmed with a fellow member, and turn up only to find your event postponed or cancelled, don't make it a fruitless visit: at the very least make use of a portion of the time you have put aside for the shoot, take your blinkers off and have a look around and take note of what we have and try visualise what it took to acquire the materials, do the earth works, build our facilities and the man hours involved by volunteers to achieve this.

See what is happening in whatever shooting event is in progress, talk to the members involved and if you display interest chances are you will get a shot or three out of whatever is sending lead down range. Better still take a moment or two to read the notice board, empty a rubbish tin, check the water level in the hot water urn or put something back in it's place, check the gear for your particular discipline, clean the toilets, or the kitchen. Don't blame someone else or another discipline and bugger off in a huff because you failed to do a simple check and got it all so wrong thereby inconveniencing yourself.

The work-load for the do-ers seems to be increasing as they are expected (or left to) do more and more. So remember, there is no favouritism, dispensation, fuel vouchers, tool allowance, discount on subscription or privilege if you are one of the dedicated few or a committee member. We all pay a sub.

If this sounds like a complaint, bitch or a moan, you've got it. If it has hit a nerve then perhaps you need to up your game, have an input and stop relying on and leaving it all to others.

A classic example of one of the simple things that would make life so much easier for the few, and save time that could be spent more productively: glass bottles, tins, metal, drink cans do not burn so don't walk past the skip bin to throw them in the incinerator because it is easier or more convenient. Think about it?

Imagine if the 'do-ers' in the club suddenly stopped do-ing???

Two x 15 round mags have been purchased for the club Ruger 10/22 and are now availble.

    IPSC Nationals:Report from Phil Dunlop

It had been 12 years since the Wairarapa has hosted a 3 Gun Nationals but after a couple of North Island Champs, that all changed at the end of April when 42 shooters from all around the country descended on Gladstone for three days of challenging competition over 19 stages.

The shooting calendar is pretty full these days, so we were forced to take a late date in terms of the weather, but it turned out to be stunning, warm but not hot, and dry until the end.

The shooting was tough at times, but most people seemed happy with the match, though there were two disqualified for dangerous gun handling during the shotgun match. This was a timely reminder, handling guns, long or short at speed, under stress requires lots of practice and attention.

Our club was well represented with all four members getting places in the aggregate or individual matches.  Chris Robinson from Christchurch won the open tournament, and I was lucky enough to win Standard.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club for its support, for providing a fantastic facility for this event, and thanks too to all the members who contributed time to the setting up and running of the match, particularly, Pam, Bevan, Nikky, Brandon, Neville Eric and Lindsay.

I have applied to host the North Island pistol champs next year, and watch this space for New Zealand's first IPSC Rifle Champs at Gladstone in the spring.

    "Bullet-In" club newsletter #289 for April 2016

    FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the new Committee will be at the range on Wednesday 27th April (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

In case you haven't already, (as the sub's have not changed for this financial year), please visit your personal club profile, update any details & pay your subs in order to be financial. Our new Treasurer, Pam Fourie, will be happy to clarify any queries you may have.

    PRESIDENT'S NOTES

    B-Cat Events

Clearly there is concern amongst a few B cat members with regards to recent communication. Concern because you have discussed amongst yourselves rather than with the secretary or myself.

What members must realise is that conditions of B cat requirements have not changed but conditions within our club have in that they were relaxed a few years back. It is quite irrelevant who and why condition were relaxed and I will not enter into the politics of that era.

Members who joined during this period and the few proceeding years it appears, are suddenly feeling pressure simply because they are either unaware and were perhaps misinformed regarding B endorsement criteria.

Clubs and/or members appear to interpret these conditions to suit their own purpose. I contacted Police National HQ by phone. The requested email response outlining conditions/requirements is below.

In our political climate with ever increasing pressure on firearm owners/users we must remain vigilant and proactive. Far better to know the rules regarding firearms ownership as a whole and comply rather than do a band aid patch-up after the damage is done.

I think most would agree that we are fortunate to have so many disciplines under the one umbrella. The subject of “B” cat. Club Events relates to B endorsed pistol members and those on B cat probation.

There is no intention to hinder current shooting practices or deter anyone from enjoying our facilities. B endorsed members simply need to be aware that in applying for a B endorsement they agreed to certain conditions and a commitment to retain their pistol endorsement and it is the individuals responsibility to know what these requirements are.

There are plenty of matches in the range schedule that qualify as B cat club sanctioned events (refer to the attached email from Police HQ). In the last Bullet-In there was an invite for anyone who felt they weren't being catered for to put their hand up and have a say. To date, no response. I also asked for views and opinions. There was no response or forewarning of the barrage of negative comments erred at the last committee meeting. Surely knowing and complying with the conditions of a B endorsement are important just as it is to comply with range certification requirements.

At the very least this exercise has got people on the topic and hopefully created some awareness regarding pistol endorsed requirements. It has also highlighted the fact we require more trained Range Officers and this will be addressed in the near future.

Interestingly enough just this morning I received the attached email from COLFO. Another reason to know the rules, be pro-active and remain vigilant.

    The Police response was:

    Hi Gary

The purpose of the requirement is to ensure that all members are active participants in the pistol club. We expect that the majority of that activity (at least 2/3) is shooting in club organised/sanctions shooting events (and not personal practise for instance). Certainly attendance at the club AGM would be accepted as an attendance, as would the odd working bee.

    |  paul.gatland@police.govt.nzIn the interim, due to the talk and obvious awareness, it is best we leave it to individuals whose attendances fall short of the requirements to work on improving their situation. Club sanctioned B cat events will be marked *B in the range schedule to assist members in identifying such events. Also the AGM and any scheduled working Bees will be identified in the range schedule.

Look at the positives: many agree that participating in competitions and events, apart from the camaraderie, bullshit and banter, is a great way to keep a personal check on safety, and handling skills relating to your shooting practices/discipline.

FYI: “B” cat attendance sheets are checked every 6 months and those slipping behind are contacted and given a gentle nudge. Clearly some are effected by personal circumstances or commitments from time to time and if you require a dispensation, contact the secretary so we can address your situation. You are however required to keep your PNZ fees up to date if on dispensation.

Range 6 development: In the face of great weather, considerable earthworks on range 6 were undertaken last weekend, resulting in a number of new ranges being created.  Check out the hompage slideshow for some of the pictures.

Two x 15 round mags have been purchased for the club Ruger 10/22 and should be here this week.  I could have made good use of one at the last speed steel i.r. 10 shot mag, 10 targets, malfuntion, eject "1" round to clear = #@%!!!

The club has also ordered a good quantity of the CCI standard velocity .22 ammo which will hopefully be here in May.  Don't panic, we still have a few bricks in stock.  The last we could get and a price enabling us to hopefully (depending on whether we can arrange transport from Auckland) keep it at $50 a brick.

Reloading: We have a wealth of experience within our club and on talking to members, there are many keen to learn more or start reloading. PRESIDENT'S NOTES

Member Open Day: 48 members turned up for our inaugural member's open day Sunday 31st January. The cross section from all disciplines created a great atmosphere, lots of laughs, plenty of tall tales and supposedly true, bull-shit and banter, eye-opening displays and many shooting experiences to be enjoyed by all. It was great to see Ron, Chris and Gillivray on the day.

We had everything from pea shooters to shoulder thumpers, black powder, lever, semi auto, revolvers, muzzle loaders, pump guns, cap and ball, flintlock and a compressed air driven 'spud' canon......wow!

Many positive comments from “I have been a member of this club for bloody donkey's years and had no idea that so many types of shooting went on here, this is great”, “Shit that was fun, I want one”, to “When are we doing it again?”

Thanks to all who attended, those who did the demos, showed members how to do it, and participated in the different shooting available, and a huge thanks to Janet who prepared, cooked and served a great BBQ lunch, then left the kitchen spotless.

So all in all a successful club day and the interest and enthusiasm was such, we have suggestions and offers for the next 'one', so........ watch this space.  Personal expenses: this was a club funded event so if you incurred a personal cost for ammo please advise so we will arrange a refund.

Eddie is working on a video of some of the highlights, a link to which will be posted here in due course.

Range keys: newer members may not be aware the club went to considerable expense to upgrade our security three years or so ago with new locks and a very good key system. Those (apart from the committee and section directors) will have paid a bond which is refundable once that key is returned. The keys are numbered and recorded in a register next to the members name at time of issue. You are accountable for your key and reminded that one of the conditions of issue is that you do not loan your key to allow anyone access to our facilities.

Trail's End 2016: Wild Ben reports preparation is coming along well with a few participants signed up. Help for this event would be much appreciated. Preparation/set-up at the ranges will be Thursday 17th March. Contact Wild Ben on 027 2751863 or wildbenhickok@gmail.com

    B” category requirements:

A heads up to “B” endorsed members was put out in the last Bullet-In regarding your obligations to retain your pistol endorsement. Thanks to those who forwarded comment.

As a Police Certified and PNZ Gazetted club we have an obligation to ensure our “B” cat members achieve a minimum of twelve club sanctioned events. A review is in progress and the discussion at the February meeting has the committee all pretty much on the same page with a few finer points to work through.

We have a few months until the next Pistol NZ year starts 1st July 2016 and a draft of conditions will be put out in the near future for member scrutiny. Once finalised the conditions will be publicised via the club web site and Bullet-In.

Included with the usual scheduled discipline events will be club training days and monthly Wednesday competitions (if demand requires). If you consider there is no shoot that fulfills your interests then please consider organising an event and advise the committee of who and how it will be run. If acceptable it will be entered in the range schedule. A qualified RO will be required to run the event if it qualifies as a club sanctioned shoot/match/practice day/ plinker's day or whatever.  Be advised however, that we can not push the envelope any further with regards to obtaining more range days.

In the meantime, views, ideas, feedback are welcome so please contact either myself, the secretary or talk to your section director at your earliest convenience.

The club is in no way attempting to hinder current shooting practices or restrict members from having a casual practice or 'plink', but rather to clarify the requirements and what qualifies as a club sanctioned event, and record attendances accordingly.

PNZ training manuals: hard copies of the General Coaching Skills Manual were recently ordered and are available. FYI, manuals for all disciplines are available on-line at: http://www.pistolnz.org.nz/training.aspx

The WPSSC: in order to function efficiently it is inevitable and essential that the club evolves with the times. The Wild Apricot web site (http://www.wpssc.org.nz or http://wpssc.wildapricot.org) is seeing more activity as members become familiar with this effective means of checking range schedules, club events, away events, communication, Bullet-In, paying subs, entering competitions etc.

The new building on range 3 has eliminated the need to hire marquees (and the associated costs), provided an all weather shooting range and an inside area large enough for functions etc. The new toilet block is nearing completion and will soon be kitted out with efficient and hygienic fittings such as toilet paper/ paper towel and soap dispensers. Bill, our project manager, has secured a favourable deal from a local company who is supplying the fittings free of cost and the consumables at a very good rate. The club will no longer have to hire port-a-loos.

Soon you will see paper cups provided at the refreshment station and the recently purchased cold drink dispenser is located in the range 3 building ($2 per can).

While some costs relating to these improvements and changes may be viewed as unnecessary, it is creating a more user friendly environment while reducing logistics and making the club far easier to manage and function effectively. Feedback and ideas on/for improvements are always welcome.

Facilities Update: some will have noticed that the terraces at the back of ranges 1 & 2 have been removed, creating far safer ranges and more usable space, thanks to the efforts of Andrew and Jason. In the meantime Gerry V, Derek M and Roger L fitted partition walls and doors in the new loos bringing the amenities block one step closer to completion.

    IPSC Nationals:

WPSSC will be hosting the 3 Gun National Championship at the Gladstone Range, from 28 - 30 April 2016 starting at 8:00 with Briefing, for 8.30 start.  The entry form is here & the committee would appreciate any help members may be able to offer to Phil Dunlop & his crew would be appreciated.

Wasp infestation: So far I have destroyed 9 'paper wasp nests' on, in and around club buildings.  Anyone noticing a nest or wasp activity please advise me (Gary) of the location, day etc. and I will 'search and destroy'.

    Warm Barrels.

    Gary

    OTHER NOTES

Holster Course: please contact either Phil Dunlop or the secretary if you are interested in attending a holster course for any discipline or feel the need to refresh your skills. A date and time will be publicised as available.

Reloading: We have a wealth of experience within our club and on talking to members, there are many keen to learn more or start reloading. A message from Gary Rawlinson (President WPSSC)

Members Open Day: Sunday 31st January 2016, 10.00 – 1400 hrs, BBQ provided:
This was a great opportunity to get to meet other club members and see what they get up to in their various disciplines.
The demonstrations which had been arranged, along with a few unusual & rare guns, saw some different action on the range, & there were many members (& a few visitors) who tried something they may not otherwise have considered.

Eddie is working on a video of some of the highlights, a link to which will be posted here in due course.

Trails End 2016: 18th - 20th March is our annual Cowboy Action showcase event which runs over three days and is a Frontier and Western style event which attracts shooters from many clubs, who compete with firearms or replica firearms of the period. Well worth coming along and having a look. If you can lend a hand for a few hours setting up, running the shoot, in the kitchen or at any time please contact Ben on 027 2751863 or wildbenhickok@gmail.com.

National Three Gun Champs: the club is hosting this event over 28/29/30 April. If you are not involved it is a great opportunity to see some of NZ's best shooters compete at a National level.

New toilet block: the toilet panel partitions should be installed shortly and the finishing touches completed.  MANY thanks to Bill Aitchison & Ben Garrett, & the group of willing volunteers who have give of their time to get it to this stage!

Facility Improvements: members were invited to the last meeting to discuss any ideas or requirements for improvement or up-grade of our facilities. Some good ideas were tabled at the meeting. Draft plans for improvements to the area of range 6 to introduce more ranges is underway and there is a meeting for all section directors and interested parties at 0900 am Saturday 13th February 2016 so if you wish to have an input please attend. Any changes will not effect the use of the existing range.

Holster Course: please contact either Phil Dunlop, the secretary if you are interested in attending a holster course for any discipline or feel the need to refresh your skills. A date and time will be publicised as available.

Drink vending machine: the committee has approved a 'capped price' purchase for a drink vending machine. This will alleviate the need to leave drinks and cash unsecured as it is at present. Unfortunately the need for a vending machine, and the associated costs has come about because the honesty system has been abused.

Stores and equipment: if you see stocks running low on targets, backing boards, clays, or anything required to keep the club or particular discipline functioning efficiently, please let me know well in advance so it does not effect the operation of the club or shooting events.

'B' endorsement requirements: a reminder to B cat members that in order to retain your endorsement you are required to attend 12 club sanctioned events during the course of the year and use your pistols. Simply turning up and signing your 'B' cat form, or signing when you sight in your rifle, shoot clays or your muzzle loader, is not sufficient. There are plenty of events on the range schedule so if you are slipping behind in attendances you have no excuse.

If you have a genuine reason you can apply to the committee for a dispensation for a period however you are still required to remain financial with Pistol NZ.

The secretary will advise PNZ and record your dispensation in the club records.

The requirements are outlined on a separate page with detail recently obtained from Pistol NZ which outlines the requirements. The committee will discuss B cat attendances at the next meeting.

Club polo shirts with the club emblem are still available. They look great and we encourage members competing at other clubs to acquire one. Alternatively you can have any article of clothing embroidered with the club emblem. Your secretary has the details.

Treasurer: Thank-you Pam Fourie for volunteering for the position of treasurer. Pam was co-opted onto the committee and into the position of treasurer at the committee meeting 27 January.

Financial: the club account balance as of the 27th January meeting was $46519.77.
Payments: (into the club account) please use your surname, and as a reference explain what the payment is for e.g. subs, ammo, ISSF match etc. This will save the treasurer a lot of time and head- ache and your non-descriptive payment becoming a donation.

Complaints and Issues: some have worked to get the club to the current level. We currently have great morale, team spirit and financial stability. Those few years of toil can erode far quicker than it took to get the club to this level. If you have a problem or issue with the club or a member(s), often the personal approach and a direct question or two will explain, resolve or clarify things before they escalate out of hand.

Failing that, please express any concerns to a committee member or come to the next committee meeting and discuss rather than cast aspersions and create unfounded rumour within the club. Most go to enjoy their sport and make the most of their allocated range time. Petty bickering, rumor and negativity is detrimental and any serious concerns, complaints, or issue should be handled by the committee and correspondence regarding the same forwarded only by the secretary, president or vice president once the matter has been discussed at committee level.

Furthermore, we have a positive relationship with our landlord who is somewhat more relaxed now the club is 'ship shape', to the extent that in recent times he has relaxed shooting days and hours. This benefits members in more ways than one: it not only gives more range opportunity to members but creates more opportunity for our increasing corporate shoot requirements and range bookings, (which is beneficial to the club financially), and we also gain a few new members.

Positive publicity and perception of our club and safe firearm use has raised our profile which has a follow on effect for ownership and shooting in general. I have liaised and negotiated with our landlord for the past three years. Positive comment generates positive feedback and generated cooperation and understanding which is great for our landlord/tenant relationship, so lets all strive to keep it that way.

Reloading: We have a wealth of experience within our club and on talking to members, there are many keen to learn more or start reloading. Good advice can save money in the long run when it comes to purchasing reloading tools, components, etc. Please indicate your interest to the secretary or myself and we could put together an evening workshop/demo/discussion and display of reloading gear.

Leaving the Range: when last leaving the range ensure all fence rails on ranges 1 & 2 are in place, lock/close all doors and gates and electric wires. There is a check-list on the outside wall beside the main door. Unfortunately the electric wire at the range entrance was not replaced earlier this week and rails were left down on range 2 allowing cattle access. Apart from faeces on ranges 1-5, the cattle did considerable damage and destruction to six or more cherry trees on range 5. A member has nurtured these trees for about three years to enhance the aesthetics of our club and that work is all but destroyed. Don't assume all is secure. It doesn't take much time, thought or effort to do a final check prior to leaving.

Club Website; how do I use it?

If you're not a "digital native", living online, a teen-ager or IT geek, you most likely feel daunted by the sight of a complicated looking website?   Well, fear no more!  Gary has suggested that we put together a set of guidelines for using & abusing it (since we already have it!); what do you think?  Comments & (helpful) suggestions welcomed below.

A message from Gary Rawlinson, President WPSSC

The new year is off to a good start with good attendances and many taking advantage of the Public Holiday range days. For those who are unaware of these additional range days, they are posted on the club (wild apricot) website for quick reference (NB:
they are: all public holidays except:  Christmas Day, Anzac Day & Good Friday).

A reminder about Wednesday shooting hours: during daylight saving shooting cannot commence until 1500 hrs (3 pm) and non daylight saving days shooting can commence at 1400 hrs (2 pm).

Finish time for Wednesday at any time of year is 2000 hrs (8 pm) or dusk, whichever occurs first. In other words when the days get shorter and it gets dark earlier than 2000 hrs, shooting must  cease. No shooting during the hours of darkness without committee approval and the landlord's consent; e.g. the range has been used with prior approval during the hours of darkness for police training purposes.

Corporate shoots: these shoots are becoming very popular. We are receiving good feedback from clients and getting repeat groups which is extremely encouraging. Corp shoots are our biggest revenue earner and go a long way toward club running costs and have eliminated the need to increase membership subscriptions for several years now.

Offers of assistance at these shoots is always welcome and members helping often comment after witnessing the great experience visitors get from these events.

    Club Day:
we are in the process or organising a 'Club day'. Many members are unaware of what types of shooting are available at our club so the committee is at present organising an 'open/bring a gun' day which is intended for all members to attend the range and see what goes on in the different disciplines. Demos for speed shooting, clay shooting, black powder etc will hopefully be organised. Club firearms will be available and limited rounds provided for members to experience the different types of shooting. A nominal fee is anticipated but the club will subsidise ammunition and put on a BBQ and tea and coffee for all to relax and enjoy. The idea is to get members from all disciplines at the club on the one day and experience what types of shooting there are. Everything from black powder, clay, speed steel, three gun, service rifle, long range shooting and a 'bring a gun' event where members can handle and maybe shoot something different.

Please forward any suggestions (for this day) to the
secretary and on the day you are invited to 'bring a gun'. So give it some thought and if you have an interesting piece for anyone to view, touch or even shoot (owners option) or just need to dust something off, bring it along and tell us about it. Any restricted items on a collectors endorsement will require a police permit.

The next committee meeting is Wednesday January 27
at the club rooms (ie the range buildings) and will commence at 1930 hrs (7.30 pm).

Members from all disciplines or discipline representatives are invited to attend and discuss any ideas or requirement to help improve facilities etc.

Any expenses will have to be approved but we are wanting feedback to upgrade or improve facilities.
