"Bullet-In" club newsletter #301

for July/August 2017

FROM THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting of the Committee will be at the DA Hall PArkvale on Wednesday 26 July 2017 at 7:00 pm (last Wednesday of the month); all new members are encouraged to attend, & all members are welcome!

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

From The President & Committee:

Flooding: The recent weather has caused considerable damge at the range. Several buildings were breached by the water and debris left by the receeding water is all around the ranges. Some minor  subsidence is evident on range 6.

Working bee: 0900 hrs Saturday 29th July.

Please contact the secretary for any info re this. The purpose of the working be is to have a general clean-up after the above mentioned flooding. Shovel, wheel barrows, rakes and a trailor or two would be useful. BBQ lunch provided.

Import permits:

During recent discussions with police WPSSC members highlighted the fact some
members were attempting 'do it yourself' or unqualified mintenance on firearms due to the frustration experienced as a result of the time delays and/or non issue of import permits, emphasising the danges of such work and where the blame would fall in the event of an accident. The police have certainly improved the time in issuing permits. They advise 30 days from application and if not received within 40 days contact your local arms officer.

For those who are unaware, one (original) copy of the permit has to be sent to the incoming customs office when you receive notice from that office your goods have arrived in NZ. They will usually also ask for a copy of your FAL. An emailed scanned copy or pic is usually suffices or you can send a copy with the import permit.

AGM: we are only a few months out from the AGM so please give some thought as to who you want to represent the club in the various positions on the committee etc. Also give some thought to any items you wish discussed at the AGM.

Bullet-In: in the meantime, please forward any info/items of interest, pics and match resuts to the secretary.

OTHER NEWS:

Phil Dunlop's Russia trip (to shoot) - (link to picture: PhilD Russia.jpg)

It seems like a lifetime ago that I agonised over the decision to go to Moscow for the first IPSC World Rifle Champs, but a few days after arriving home and back to work, it’s a fading memory that I thought I better share with my shooting mates.

The venue was Patriot Park, 70km out of Moscow and described as Russia’s military Disneyland, and that turned out to be a very accurate description. Just down the road, the Keblinka tank Museum, across the road, an air force base, and the park itself, recently home to two divisions of Russian Military.

Patriot is now home to a huge collection of military memorabilia, a vast area for re-enactment, including a reconstruction of the Reichstag, complete with Soviet flag flying overhead, a stadium for tank racing, a junior camp, offices for amongst others, Kalasnikov group, and most importantly, 30 rifle ranges, all with covered areas, and varying from 50, to 300 meters long.

I have shot two World Pistol Champs, but have never seen an opening ceremony like the Russian one, Guards throwing rifles around, cavalry, Mig 29’s overhead and the commander of the space station via satellite link. Greetings from Vladimir Putin were read by the deputy Prime Minister and the crowd was in awe and humbled by the most generous welcome.

The match itself was held over the next 6 days, 5 on deck, shooting 6 stages a day, and a rest day, which for us was on the 5 day of the match. We wasted no time scrambling into Moscow to get a look at the Kremlin, Red Square and Saint Basils, and although it took us 4 hours to cover the 70km home, we were all very impressed with the city and its attractions, though I suspect Lenin would be turning in his mausoleum, if he saw the brands represented in the most lavish shopping mall right on Red square!

The match itself was a reasonably simple affair, few complicated stages, most having only one reasonable strategy, but the difficulty of the shots made all the difference. Running through an array of close range targets, taking a few off hand shots at medium range steel, and then having to find the breath and restraint to engage a few paper targets at 300m was a huge demand, but one the Kiwis proved equal to. There were 5 of us, two shooting Standard, (iron Sights) and three in Open division, and together with one Australian, we made up Squad 45.

The small squads meant that the match was fast and efficient, but with the facility being so vast it also meant that we really weren’t in touch with what others were doing. As it turned out, knowing what the Fins and Norwegians were doing was the important measure and not seeing those guys was the biggest disappointment.

As you’d expect, there were good and bad days and surprisingly, the first two days, with rain and temperatures around 6 degrees, produced my best shooting. My biggest fear had been the 300 meter shots, having never had a chance to confirm my theoretical zeros before the match, but when the first two targets were scored, double Alpha, Alpha Charlie, I relaxed and began to enjoy it all.

In the end I took 36th overall in Standard, and 6th Senior. That result put me in the Senior shoot off, rubbing shoulders with among others, the great Jerry Miculek and his very talented daughter Lena. It was a very long morning with lots of noise and smoke, with many of the 800 competitors present, but somehow I took out third place in the shoot offs and was rewarded with a very cool trophy.

It’s been 15 years since I last shot for NZ, and in the meantime, work and life have seemed to dictate, but I am so glad to have got back into international competition. I can’t overstate the pleasure in meeting others who share our passion, to be approached by an Italian shooter who had noticed that we were ranked closely on the score sheet and wanted to see me shoot, or to share the joy as the World Champions took their place on the podium after an intense and arduous match.

It’s something I will never forget and it has rekindled my desire to do this again, perhaps the European Rifle Champs in Sweden next year.

It has also been a humbling experience, particularly when friends and colleagues have helped me financially with what was a big bill, for that and the support I have received, thank you very much, and for those with the drive to practice for an event like this, don’t hold back, set your goals, train hard and get out there, meet and compete with your peers, at club level, nationally or internationally and take full advantage of the opportunities this amazing sport offers.

Service Rifle report, Sunday 6th Aug 2017

Seven shooters turned up to take part in today’s centre fire match in clear and sunny conditions, with 55 rounds before sighters.

The highlight of the day was getting to open and use the new shooting mats the club had purchased. Many thanks to Bill A for organising the purchase of these, they are most impressive with Velcro straps on the sides to keep them together and zippers to access the padding inside. Probably some of the best shooting mats we have come across.

Match 1 Application is pretty straight forward and a chance for people to get their eye in.

Match 2 Action Really? Basically, an action M with clay birds thrown in at the end.

Match 3 Gerry’s Idea. An adaptation from the WSRA, Best of American.

Sixty seconds for a minimum of fifteen rounds, standing, kneeling, prone with positions stated to the whim of the R.O. Best fifteen shots only to count.

Match 4 Barricade. Having a number randomly picked that doesn’t match the target you have been shooting on all morning, combined with reloads and position changes can make this challenging.

Results are:

1st Matt

2nd Alistair

3rd Dan

4th John

5th Andrew

6th Alex

7th Philip

Thanks to those who turned up and enjoyed themselves.

Derek

On the Range: please remember that members (committee included) go to the club to engage in activities, have a plink, test re-loads, sight in a rifle etc and often have limited time to do so.

In the interests of keeping this a positive environment in which one can relax and enjoy, please refer club politics to a monthly committee meeting. Meetings are well advertised, and all members are welcome to attend. Here views can be expressed in a controlled manner and steps taken to resolve issues in good time.

Safety on Range 6: Please note that if you are on Range 6, & need to go downrange (for whatever reason) after closing the range, place the orange "Range Closed" cone in front of the firing point to advise anyone coming to the range.  There has been one occasion where a person was observed (in time, & safety) emerging from the bush downrange before shooting was to commence.
